PokerStars' Gomes Picks up WPT Win
Alex Gomes had a pretty discouraging 2009 World Series of Poker. His best finish was 80th place for some cash in one of the events before the series was over.
It would have been easy to give up and just leave Vegas in hopes of finding luck elsewhere. Instead Gomes decided to switch casinos and try a different major poker tournament on for size.
As the WSOP was winding down, the Bellagio was gearing up its Bellagio Cup V, a stop on the World Poker Tour. With 268 players taking on the main event, Gomes finally found his niche and picked up a more than $1 million payday for taking down the tournament.
It wasn't an easy win for the Brasilian who plays on Team PokerStars. He made it to the televised final table of the event last in the chip count and facing a table that included Erik Seidel, Christoffer Sonesson, Alec Torelli, Justin Smith and Faraz Jaka.
Gomes battled back for a win and walked away with $1,187,670. This gives him a WPT title to go along with the WSOP bracelet he won in 2008, and his fourth place finish in the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure WPT event.
